Learn – How to Apply Makeup

Applying Concealer

Always apply your concealer on top of foundation and before you add powder. If you try to do things the other way round, you might wipe the concealer off when applying your foundation? To disguise under-eye darkness, gently pat concealer under the eyes using the index finger. Exert only gentle pressure and blend outwards, taking care not to drag the skin.

Applying Blush

Apply the blusher with a brush, on the cheek, in the shape of a triangle, tapering towards the temples. Blend it outwards and upwards. No lines of demarcation should be visible. It should not have a harsh effect, but rather lend the face a warm, soft glow.

Eyeliner Application

You will instantly look more awake and the whites of your eyes will appear brighter, It can also make small eyes appear larger, Never lend eye pencils to other people, as this is one of the quickest ways to spread germs, If you have an eye infection, replace eye pencils and mascaras to avoid reinfecting the eyes, Sharpen pencils regularly to ensure that the points are clean.

Applying Eyeshadow

To ensure that your eyeshadow is long-lasting and crease-proof, make-up artists advise application with a damp make-up brush. As the eyeshadow is blended into the skin, it will dry. Also, because the product will cling to the wet brush, stray particles of powder will not collect on the cheeks. Eyeliner should be applied close to the base of the eyelashes. Operating an eyeliner pencil, run the pencil above the upper eyelid lashes right close to the lash line.

Applying Foundation

To apply foundation, start from the centre of the face, dotting on to the cheeks and forehead and blending outwards, first making sure your fingertips or make-up sponges are spotlessly clean. Gently blot the skin with a tissue to remove any excess product or surface oil. Never drag the skin if you are using your fingertips to apply cosmetics. Smooth foundation over the lips and eyelids to act as a base for lip and eye products. If you’re not very good at blending foundation, try applying it with a make-up sponge.

Applying Mascara

With modern mascaras there is no need to pump the wand in and out of its container before applying, This can actually cause overload and result in clogged lashes, You need only enough product on the wand to coat the lashes, so any excess should be wiped off with a tissue, Roll the wand through the lashes to help curl-definition, Always work on the upper lashes from underneath to avoid overloading and keep mascara on the lower lashes to a minimum, especially if you are looking tired or have a tendency to rub your eyes a lot.

Some Makeup Application Tips

1. Wash face with cleansing milk.

2. Apply a toner followed with a moisturizer.

3. Start by using a little foundation so as to get a very thin layer of foundation to even out your skin color. You may even use a cover stick or concealer marks, dark circles and blemishes.

4. Apply concealer if required.

5. Brush powder for the matte finish as it controls oiliness

6. Do up your eyes with shadow, liner, kajal and lastly mascara.

7. Blush your cheeks, according to your face shape.

8. Finish defining the lips with a lip pencil and lipstick.

I want to start using makeup, (foundation, eyeshadow etc) but I’m not very good at applying it. I tend to look like a circus clown. Where can I learn to apply it correctly? Can anyone recommend some good website etc?

  6. I would go to a make up counter and ask them everything you want to know. They know what they’re taking about and will be very helpful! Remember, less is more :)

  7. Foundation- If you have dry skin use foundation if you have oily skin use powder. When using foundation if you’re face is a different color than neck you have the wrong color. Also ask people if they can tell you’re wearing it cause if they can you’re wearing too much.

Eyeshadow- You can match it to your clothes or your eyes. I suggest eyes then you only have to buy one palette. Green/hazel eyes you want to go with browns, golds, tans, olives, colors like that. Blue eyes try a light silver or very pale violet. Never under any circumstances wear blue eyeshadow it’s not the eighties.

Eyeliner/Mascara- It’s hard. For the bottom lid pull down your lid and do a line on the red part of your eye. Try to get someone to show you if you can. I like to wear brown mascara because I think it’s more natural and I also have brown hair. Pick black or brown whichever looks better on you. Remember, you don’t need buckets of eyeliner like my avatar is wearing :) And everyone says once you start wearing eyeliner you won’t like the way you look without it. If it doesn’t look good (which is doesn’t on some people) don’t bother wearing it. You probably don’t need it.

Blush- Don’t wear it unless you’re ghostly pale or your face is one color.

That’s pretty much it. Don’t feel the need to wear tons of makeup if it makes you uncomfortable and if you can get a sister or something to give you some more tips that would be good. Have fun with it, good luck!
